East Fife Sports Council Supports Innovative Table Tennis Initiative for Parkinson’s Sufferers
St Andrews Table Tennis Club is proud to announce the successful completion of a pioneering pilot project aimed at enhancing the lives of individuals with Parkinson’s disease through the sport of table tennis. Funded by a generous £200 donation from East Fife Sports Council, this initiative took place at the Cosmos Community Centre and will now become a permanent fixture due to its resounding success.
Over the nine-week pilot phase, the project attracted 11 Parkinson’s sufferers and one carer who attended regularly, fully engaging with both the physical and social benefits of the sport. Participants expressed great enthusiasm for the sessions, which included a blend of table tennis play and social interactions at the Centre’s coffee bar.
The initiative’s success was further bolstered by the participation of four club volunteers at each session. These volunteers were instrumental in providing tailored support and ensuring an inclusive environment, helping participants to regain confidence and enhance their skills regardless of their experience level.
The project also benefited from the welcoming atmosphere provided by the staff at Cosmos Community Centre, making it an inviting space for all participants.
Thanks to the positive feedback and effective model established during the pilot, St Andrews Table Tennis Club is excited to transition this initiative from a pilot to a regular part of their club’s activities. This move ensures continued support for the Parkinson’s community, helping to improve their quality of life through the joy of table tennis.
East Fife Sports Council is delighted to have initiated such a valuable contribution to the community and looks forward to seeing the ongoing positive impacts of this project.
