East Fife Sports Council Supports Table Tennis Initiative for Parkinson’s
East Fife Sports Council is delighted to announce its support for a new table tennis program designed to benefit individuals with Parkinson’s Disease. St Andrews Table Tennis Club recently received a development grant from East Fife Sports Council to launch these specially tailored sessions, which are already making a positive impact in the community.
The program, hosted at the Cosmos Community Centre in St Andrews, runs weekly sessions aimed at enhancing motor skills and daily living activities for people with Parkinson’s. Research has shown that table tennis can offer therapeutic benefits, helping to improve balance, coordination, and even reduce symptoms of depression often associated with Parkinson’s.
Mark Coxe, chair of the Fife branch of Parkinson’s UK, has endorsed the program and highlighted the extensive research supporting the benefits of physical activity, particularly table tennis, for those with Parkinson’s. Brendan Hawdon (pictured in action), a participant in the program, expressed the profound impact the sessions have had on his motor skills, balance, and overall well-being, stating, “I get much more out of playing table tennis than they suggest.”
With the encouragement and camaraderie of St Andrews Table Tennis Club, participants are enjoying both physical and social benefits, contributing to a stronger sense of community and support.
The East Fife Sports Council remains committed to funding programs that empower individuals to lead healthier, active lives. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of this initiative on the Parkinson’s community in Fife.
Sessions are open to all individuals with Parkinson’s and take place at Cosmos Community Centre, St Andrews, every Tuesday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
