Bell Baxter High School Skips to Victory at Prestigious Hay Trophy!
Young Curlers from East Fife Area Triumph in National Schools Competition
East Fife Sports Council is delighted to announce the fantastic victory of the Bell Baxter High School curling team at the 50th Anniversary of the prestigious Hay Trophy. The team, representing the East Fife Sports Council area, showcased exceptional skill and determination to clinch the coveted title in a thrilling two-day competition held at the Dewars Centre in Perth.
The Hay Trophy, also known as the Open Schools competition, holds a significant place in Scottish curling history. First presented in 1975 by the legendary Chuck Hay, a gold medallist at the 1967 World Curling Championships, the tournament has seen numerous future Scottish curling stars grace its ice over the past five decades. Notable past winners include curling icons such as David Hay, Mike Hay, David Murdoch, Hammy McMillian Snr & Jnr, Grant Hardie, and Olympic champion Eve Muirhead, highlighting the high calibre of competition the trophy attracts.
This year’s anniversary event was no exception, drawing 13 talented school teams from across Scotland. Over two intense days, the young curlers battled it out through four rounds of matches, with the final outcome hanging in the balance until the very last stone.
Ultimately, it was the composed and skillful team from Bell Baxter High School in Cupar who emerged victorious. The winning team, led by Skip Cameron Lindsay, and featuring Elliot Cullerton, Kirin Burgess, and Rowan Burgess, demonstrated remarkable teamwork and precision throughout the competition. Their dedication and talent have brought immense pride to the East Fife Sports Council area.
The trophy and prizes were presented by none other than David Hay, adding a special touch of legacy to the anniversary celebrations.
While Bell Baxter High School celebrated their well-deserved win, Forfar Academy put in a strong performance to secure the runners-up position, and Perth Academy claimed a commendable third place.
East Fife Sports Council extends its warmest congratulations to Cameron, Elliot, Kirin, and Rowan on their fantastic achievement. Their success is a testament to their hard work, the support of their school, and the vibrant curling community within the East Fife area.
The event’s success was also made possible by the dedicated ice team at Dewars Centre, who ensured the smooth running of the competition. Furthermore, the commitment of parents, supporters, and teaching staff in enabling the teams to travel and participate was greatly appreciated.
This victory for Bell Baxter High School underscores the strength of youth curling within the East Fife Sports Council area and bodes well for the future of the sport in the region. We look forward to following the continued success of these talented young athletes.
